The history of American horse racing began in New York when the British settlers brought horses and horse racing with them to the New World and built the first racetrack in Long Island around 1665.

The rapid growth of the industrial economy after the Civil War also gave rise to horse betting on races. By 1890 there were 314 race tracks operating across the country.

Today some of the most anticipated racing season are held in New York at Saratoga Race tracks, Belmont Park, Aqueduct, and harness racing raceways.

Aqueduct Racetrack

Belmont ParkBest known as the "Big A", Aqueduct racetrack is located in Queens, New York. It was opened in 1894 and rebuilt in 1959. It has three courses: The Main Track (dirt), Inner Dirt Track, and a turf track (grass). Aqueduct runs in the winter when star horses and jockeys jostle to warmer climates like Florida and California racetracks.


Belmont Park - Home of Belmont Stakes

Belmont ParkBelmont Park is home of the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of the Triple Crown races (25 weeks after the Kentucky Derby and 3 weeks after the Preakness Stakes). The park has the largest dirt racecourse of any thoroughbred race track not only in North America but the world at a mile and a half (2414 m). Saratoga Race Course

Saratoga Race CourseSaratoga Race Course is a 350-acre racetrack in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Site of the the Travers Stakes, America's oldest major thoroughbred horse race. The Saratoga annual meet consists of a six-week meeting with Labor Day as the last day of racing.

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is a private, non-profit racing association that owns and operates the three largest thoroughbred racing tracks in New York: Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga.

New York Harness Racing, Trotting or Standardbred

Harness racing is a form of horse racing restricted to Standarbreds, and usually pull two-wheeled carts called sulkies. Standardbreds have proportionally shorter legs and longer bodies than thoroughbreds. Buffalo Raceway Harness w/ Picks & Tips

Buffalo Raceway has been a harness racing fixture since the 1960's and was considered one of the top ten tracks in America. Located in Hamburg, NY, it was founded and opened by James J. Dunnigan in 1942. The raceway is now a major contributor to the economy of Western New York.

Yonkers Raceway Harness w/ Picks & Tips

Home of the historic Empire City Trotting Club since 1899. Today, Yonkers Raceway continues its preeminence as a major attraction to the tri-state area. It also hosts the New York Night of Champions, the "best of the best" race among the 2- and 3-year offering a total $1.2 million purse.

Batavia Downs is a standardbred racetrack that boasts a half-mile oval with a Euro style rail and a new mutuel board in the infield. With live harness racing from July through December.

Monticello Raceway Harness w/ Picks & Tips

Monticello Raceway is home to the New York Sire Stakes – the track’s premiere racing event – held each summer, with close to $1 million in purses. Fondly called, Mighty M, the raceway has been a major entertainment destination since it opened in 1958, with landmark races elephant races and races featuring athletes outrunning horses. It has now evolved into a video gaming center, aside from the live races feature.

Goshen Race Track Harness w/ Picks & Tips

The Historic Track-Goshen Race Track opened in 1891, a half-mile track leased by Edward H. Harriman and his wife. Names like Uhlan, Greyhound, Speedy Rodney, Nevele Pride have made Historic Track and the surrounding area known as the "Cradle of the Trotter" for more than a hundred years.
